ILLEGAL ALLOWANCES. Auckland, Nov, 15’Die Auckland District Committee, after hearing the rejTort by the Hamilton Racing Club, decided that the Ruakura Stakes being a race for two-year-olds only apprentice jockeys could not claim any allowance and that Quintette and Abbey Bell should have been disqualified and the stakes awarded to the horses placed third and fourth. ASHHURS| RE-HANDICAPS. Palmerston North, Nov. 15. Re-handicaps for the Ashburst-Po-hangina meeting have been declared as under: — Pohangina Handicap.—Waipatu 8.10, Mangawhero 6.13. Komako Hack.—Basso 8-2, lhapotoa i 7.12. | Ashhurst Cup.—Bonnie Heather 8.6, i Beloved 7.5. | Siberia Hack.—Mangawhero 8.11, i Atapo 8.8, Sensible 7-13. i Manawatu Gorge Handicap.—Basso 18.5. NOTES. The investing public at Pahiatua made a good start on the first day at picking them, for in the Maiden Race that opened the day’s doings they placed them one, two, three. But after that they went badly astray, and nothing better backed than a fourth favourite had its number on a first dividend ticket. Each of the two principal handicaps was won by the bottom weight, the Restoration Cup winner, Beloved, being ninth and the President’s Handicap winner, March On, seventh in favour on the machine, both returning substantial dividends accordingly. Sensible, who won a race each day at Pahiatua is a five-year-old mare by King March from Idee, and faced the starter sixteen times last Season without notching a win. Despite this, she is reported as having been made the medium of some pretty heavy backing on both her successful ventures this week. She runs in the same nomination as March On, winner of the President’s Handicap. The only other double winner at the meeting was Mangawhero, an aged gelding by Marble Arch from Miss Patience, whose record last year was

six starts, no place, lie had. however, been well fancied m the Makuri Handicap on Wednesday last, but his chance was spoiled ny one of the other horses stumbling at the entrance of the straight and, in his recovery, carrying Mangawheio out, very wide. In this race ruketoi's saddle, slipped in the straight and was well over his loins when he just managed to scramble home first in front ot Mountain Top, who came up at a great hat in the last hundred yards, so raising the hopes of her backers of collecting i a double-figure dividend. Two first-day favourites at Pahiatua who then finished second managed to go one better yesterday. These were Atc.po and Waipatu. i)n the other hand, Awangawanga, who was whispered about as a good thing on Wednesday, then finished well out of a place, but came out again yesterday and won handsomely, bonny I eather, I who finished absolutely last in th? Cup race, was yesterday found equal ; to winning the big handicap of th? day.. It is suggested by an Auckland exchange that ,owing to a possibly mistaken interpretation and application of the rather involved rule as to apprentice’s allowance, both Mr. Hannon’s two-year-old fillies Quinette and Abbey Bell, who ran first and second in the Ruakura Handicap at Hamilton on Monday, may be deprived of the stakes. stakes. [Since the above was put into type word has came that the District Committee has upheld the contention raised. Subject to an appeal to the Conference judges, therefore, first money will go to Lady Rewa, who. was placed third, and second money to Muscari, who ran fourth.] That gay deceiver Spanner, of whom at least one Hawke’s Bay sportsman can have anything but pleasant memories, was among those to face the starter in the Cambridge Handicap at Claudelands on Saturday, but ho put his tail to the barrier just as the field was dispatched, and took no part in the race. The Australian bred'gelding is now numbeired among the “aged, so that, if he means to make amends for past disappointments, he has no time to lose.

Mr. J. Fraser Smith evidently has a pretty good three-year-old gelding in King Merv, who is returned as being by Quin Abbey out of a mare by the Gold Reef horse. The Rand, bred by the late Mr. G. P. Donnelly. After his win at Ellerslie he was well supported for the Claudelands Hack Handicap at Hamilton. Once into the straight he came through and won handsomely at the right end. Even now that he has to appear in open company he should hold his own. King Merv’s owner has put some of his recent winnings with that horse, Raceful, and Muscari into the purchase of ah addition to his string in the shape of another ()uin Abbey horse, Prince Abbey, who is out of a Freedom mare.

B. Rosen, the Australian lightweight jockey, had his first win, since coming to the Dominion a few weeks ago, on Bitholia at Hamilton. He has not yet been upon any horses of note, writes “Whalebone,” but the manner in which he rode Bitholia should ensure plenty of engagements for him, seeing he is an experienced horseman and can go to scale at 7st. Bitholia ireturned a great price. The Demosthenes—Las Vegas gelding Athens 11. ran third to King Abbey and Prince Rufus at Hamilton on Saturday, and, says the writer last quoted, with a little more luck would have won the Matangi Hurdles on Monday. Entering the straight King Abbey and Prince Rufus were well clear of him, but once over the last hurdle he put in a great run, and got up in time* to dead heat with King Abbey, the pair being a head behind Prince Rufus. Another couple of strides and he would have won., “He should be kept in mind for events ahead,” is “Whalebone’s’’ last word of advice.

R. Hannon’s horses were in good form at Hamilton, for they won four events, and were placed on five other occasions, the total earnings being £1135. This is the most successful meeting Hannan has experienced for a long time, but, as mentioned above, some of the gilt will be rubbed off the gingerbread should the two-year-old stakes be awarded elsewhere, Cuthbert Morse’s Prowler, by Good Nighljr-Tigerine, is a good sort, gays the Auckland “Star,” and in th© Hautapu Hack Handicap at Hamilton on Saturday he fully maintained tjie cognomen of his sire, for it was “Good Night.” The field had only settled down when he hit the front and won easily at the finish by two lengths. On Monday he ran a good race to the top of the straight, but the extra 191 b he was called upon to carry was too much for him.

Te Kara has been unlucky recentlyHe finished second to Highland in the Mitchelson Cup, second to Loyal Irish in the King Edward Handicap, and on Saturday, with top weight, was beaten by a neck by Tinohoro in the Hamilton Cup. The last Century Hurdles winner, Tinokaha, was the surprise of the Hamilton Cup field, for he was the pilot from the start till about a couple of hundred yards from the post, eventually finishing fifth. If he can lead a Hamilton Cup field for more than a mile and a-quarter, says a northern scribe, he should stand a royal chance over the battens lief ore long. True he only had 6.7, but there is no doubt about his pace, and he can jump. Royal Blood was brought back to Auckland from Sydney by the Marama this week. His owner (Mr, W. Scholium) stated that Royal Blood was started four times on the other side, and failc l on each occasion. He was only dropped 21b on his original handicap during his racing in Sydney. Just before I saving he was entered for a mile race to test the handicapper’s opinion of him, and was given 10-1. Although Parqoa is getting to be a pretty old bird now, an Auckland onlooker thinks he can see in his third and second jn the two steeplechases at Hamilton promise of better things to come at no distant date.
