Hastings High School

The arrangements with the private architects are to Im* terminated, and the work is te be supervised by the Government architect.’’ These instructions have been received by the Hawke’s Bay Education Board from the Education Department in connection with th© grant recently authorised by Cabinet for th© erection of a new Technical High School at Hastings. DIRECTOR’S REPORT. Following is the monthly report of the director of the Hastings Technical High School (Mr. W. A. G. Penlington) to the Hawke’s Bay Education Board:— Attendance.—The average roll number for the month was 156.4, and th© average daily attendance 145.7, or 93.2 per cent. Eleven pupils left to take up employment during the month. Sports.—The second annual sports were held on October 16. In spite of the damp and cold weather, the gathering was a most success!ul one, and was keenly enjoyed by the pupils. Afternoon tea was provided, vtitn the assistance of the parents. Mr. F. C. Vv jlkinson kindly donated a medal for the boys' 220 yards championship, which was won by H. Dujany. Navy League.—Mr. H. de Denne. representing the Hawke’s Bay executive of the Navy League, visited the school and addressed the pupils on the objects of the-league. . Staff.—Mr. V. A. Thomson, commercial master, hag received notification of his passing the University terms examination for Bachelor of Commerce degree in economics, currency and banking. JMii'. O. C. Stephens, M.Sc., is vacating his position as science master at the end ’of this year, having received an appointment in the south. He has rendered valuable service to th© school during the time he has been here, and his depart ur© will be regretted by staff and pupils alike. Hawke’s Bay Show.—A holiday was observed on Thursday, October 18, on account of the Hawke’s Bay Show. A number of boys taking the agricultural course were engaged in assisting th© judges, and received much valuabl© instruction thereby. It was intended to make a school display of scientific work bearing on agriculture and dairying, but owing to delay in the allotment of space this had to be abandoned. It is hoped that it will be carried out next year. Palmerston North Show—This school had a number of successes at the recent Palmerston North Show, in geometrical drawing, E. Coxon gained first prize. W. Candy second, and D. Irwin was very highly commended. In architectural drawing, E. Coxon secured both first and second prizes. In woodwork (model and dr., ring) W. Candy was first O. Jonson second and E. Coxon third. In the macing and blue print (architectural) coiupetiitou, E. Coxon was first, D. Irwin second and VV. Candy third, ihe unfailing r< gularity with which our pupils achieve success at the various shows, in com petition with those of other high schools, technical schools and scl • of art, is a matter of great credit to their intsructor, Mr. W. J. Tindall. Examinations. —Of the two candi dates presented by the school (or teachers’ Class D certificate (part 1) one was successful.

Agriculture.—The work being done on the school agricultural plots th* season comprises some interesting trials with farm crops. These include lour varietieg of oats, barleys, fiexd and garden peas, potatoes, clovers and grasses. Among the less common crops are plots of sorghum, buckwheat and Californian clover (a new clover which is reported to reach a height of between four and five feet).
