STRAWBERRIES AND CRAPES.
SIMULTANEOUS APPEARANCE ON THE MARKET.
FRUIT FROM CALIFORNIA
(Our own correspondent),
Wellington, Nov. 15.
Rarely do strawberries and grapes make their appearance together in the fruit shops in New Zealand, as one is essentially associated with spring and the other the product of late autumn. As Wellington is within 19 days’, steam of fruit-producing California in the Northern Hemisphere, all it needs to bring the two fruits on th© table simul. taneously is a stout ship with cool chambers. Th© pinkish grapes now on the market are all from California, where they are grown in the open. The skin is consequently a little on the ’thick side, but the flavour is distinctly good. They ar© packed in 301 b. barrels, stowed in granulated cork, and have this season arrived in excellent condition. They realise from 9<l to Is per lb-, sold hy z tile barrel. Nelson is the first in the field this year with its early strawberries. So far the quality is not of the best. They are being retailed from Is to 2s accord ing I© quality and condition.
