POLICEMAN CHARGED WITH THEFT. (Our own correspondent). Wellington, Nov. 14. A policeman charged with theft! This- somewhat unusual position was revealed in the Magistrate’s Court this morning when a young man named Andrew McJennett stepped into the dock to answer a charge of misappropriating monies amounting to £26 7s, which as a constable attached to the Arms Office he had received* on behalf of the New Zealand Government. In applying for a remand for a week acting-Chief Detective Luttrell explained that for the past two years accused had lieen employed as a constable at the Anns Office attached to the Central Police Station. Part of his duty was to receive applications in respect if registration of firearms, issue licenses and collect fees. “The monies set out in the charge,’’ continued the officer, “arc in reference to applications received bv him and for which he has. not issued licenses. Correspondence relating to the applica tions was secreted in a locked drawer by accused, hut yesterday, as a result of special investigation by Inspector McTlvency, whoso custom it was tc carry out a monthlv inspection of the office, it was unearthed.” The Magistrate.
