WAIPAWA.

(Own correspondent). The following have been elected unopposed members of the Waipawa Licensing Committee: Messrs H. M. Rathbone. J. J. Langridge, C. H. Critchlev, C. Saunders and E. A. Goodger.

Yesterday was Waipawa’s visiting day at the “San,” and quite a large number of cars made the trip laden with gifts' of comforts, etc. The Methodist congregation will hold their harvest thanksgiving on Sunday next.

A grand concert is to be held in the Municipal Theatre on Friday evening in aid of the funds of the Waipawa District High School, and besides action songs and other items by the pupils, which are always very pleasing, several of the leading artists of Hawke’s Bay are giving their services. Ample accommodation has been arranged for by the Natives in connection with a prolongegd sitting of the Native Land Court commencing here on April 10. Waipawa’s central position and its convenience for the Natives interested influenced the authorities in deciding upon Waipawa as the sitting place for the Court, and it is on the cards that Waipawa may yet again be the centre of the Court’s operations as it was twenty years ago. The Court was lost through lhe apathy of those controlling the town affairs but more civic activity is now prevailing. The block to be adjudicated upon is part of the Oruawharo estate, valued approximately at £72,000, besides which will be the rental for a period of 35 years. A survey of the block (Aorangi) was made seventy years ago and 7000 acres set aside for the Natives who, however, have so far not received any benefit. Owing to a search made by the Hon. A. T. Ngata a commission was set up and the three hapus. Ngaitahu, Ngatitekiti. and Ngatitoroiowaho were gazetted as claimants and the Court will have to determine the relationship of other claimants to the chiefs of these hapus. i The Borough Council is-putting another coating of tar to the main highway through the town, which will further add to its reputation as being equal to any thoroughfare in the province. The railway authorities are making improvements to the station yards to give better facilities to the large volume of traffic. | A sports meeting is to be held m connection with the District High School on St. Patrick’s Day. and is the preliminary to a combined championship meeting of other schools in the province to be held at Waipa-va at an early date, thus reviving the annual fixture of some years ago. Owing to the attention given to Coronation Park during the last year the ground is an ideal one for the purpose. Besides a convincing meeting for juvenile champions it is also proposed to cater lor other competitions. The news of the death at the County Hospital on Mlonday of the wife of Mr. W. Whyte, of Napier, but formerly of Argyll, was received here with keen regret. The deceased lady had been a resigned sufferer for some time. Besides a husband, a son and daughter, Mr. W. Whyte and Mrs A. Logan respectively are left to mourn their loss. The Waipawa Borough Council will hold its meeting on Thursdoy evening instead of Friday and the County Council meet on Monday. The Anglican Church authorities are willing to open a hostel for girls in Waipawa if they can be assured of sufficient support-* It is commonly remarked that country children are debarred from taking advantage of the excellent educational opportunities afforded in Waipawa by the fact that, at least for girls, there is insufficient suitable boarding accommodation. Although the hostel would be under Anglican management it would be open to girls of any denomination and would provide proper supervision and facilities for study as well as the advantages of a home A meeting is to be held on Tuesday next to discuss the matter with the Ven. Archdeacon Simkin. |
