AUCKLAND POLICE COURT.
ALLEGED BREACH OF BANKRUPTCY ACT. 4 Auckland, March 6. John Brittain was charged at the Police Court that, being a bankrupt, h© did contract debts to the amount of £146 6/ when he could not have had a reasonable or probable expectation of paying, as well as other debts. He was further charged with procuring goods by falsely representing that outstanding accounts had been paid. The evidence showed that from March until August accused paid cash to the firm concerned and. tlien obtained credit. He reserved bis defence, and was committed for trial.
Three charges were preferred against Frderick Howard, a watersider, at the Police Court; (1) that he did publish a doubles chart, (2) that he did publicly exhibit the chart, and (3) that on January 24 at Auckland he did carry on the business of a bookmaker. Th© accused pleaded not guiltv to the charges and elected to be tried by a jury on th© third. Th© Magistrate held that charges (1) and (2) had been proved. Sentence was deferred until the accused had been dealt with by the Supreme Court on the third.
