A HUGE LAKE.
IN THE NORTHERN TERRITORY. CONSTABLE’S DISCOVERY. Melbourne, Jan. 10. Mr. F. C. Urquhart, Administrator of the Northern Territory, has furnished the Minister for Home and Territories (Senator Pearce) with a report by mounted constable Noblet on the discovery of a large freshwater lake which does not appear on any map. It is situated about 177 miles from Coniston. a station owned by Mr. R. Stafford. The constable related that, on! leaving his station, he passed through very good grazing country for ithree days, but some of it after big rain would, he thought, be under’ water. Then he came upon country of a desert nature, arriving ultimately at the lake which has been mentioned, and which he describes as being very beautiful.
The waters were a moving mass of ducks of all descriptions. The circumference of the lake was about ten miles, there being several green grains islands in the centre. The lake was far from being full of water. When full the circumference would, he thought, be about twenty miles.
At its widest point the lake measures about three miles, hut being without a boat he could not test the depth of the water. Native guides knew nothing of there being any waters beyond the lake.
