LADIES’ TOURNAMENT. HIGH STANDARD OF PLAY. Christchurch, Jan. 19. The first day’s play in the ladies’ invitation tournament, which commenced to-day, was of a very high standard and gave the impression that the general standard of ladies’ tennis in New Zealand is higher than that among the men. The result of the match was rather a blow to the prestige of the New Zealand ladies, but Aliss AlacFarlanc and Aliss Howe defeated Miss Lloyd and Miss Gray, of the N.S.W. team and prevented the tournament from developing into a procession of victories for the visitors. Results:— Singles—First Round. Aliss Lance, N.S.W., defeated Miss Partridge, Canterbury, 6 —2, 6—l. Second Bound. Aliss Lance beat Miss Fenwick, 6—3, 6—o. Airs Lascelles beat Aliss Snow Clark, 6—l, 6—l. Aliss Howe beat Aliss Gray, 6—l, 3—6, 7—5. . Aliss AlacFarlanc beat Miss Lloyd, 6—3, 6—5. THE WAIPUKURAU TOURNAMENT The tournament under the auspices of the Waipukurau Tennis Club opened on Thursday but continual showers compelled an abandonment of play about jioon till the following day. Alatches recommenced on Friday and the courts were heavy but steadily drying. A large number of young players are competing and it is. expected ‘on present indications that the finals will not be got through till Moriday. A ladies’ committee .is working enthusiastically in providing afternoon tea. The games played up to noon on Friday were:— LADIES’ HANDICAP SINGLES. First Round. Aliss M. Ormond beat Miss R.
