The beet sugar factory at Kelham, Nottinghamshire, in which the British Government is largely interested, re-
opens shortly with a much increased ca pa city.
A fierce long drought caused a native tribo in Rhodesia to kill a human being to appease the rain god. Sixty natives were arrested in consequence and taken to Fort Darwin, in north-west Mashonaland. Rains are now soaking the country.
’ The Bengal Retrenchment Committee has recommended drastic cuts to save nearly 20,000,000 rupees, including the abolition of the posts of one minister, two executive councillors, and all divisional commissioners. Savings are recommended in all departments, but principally in police and education, while the department of fisheries is abolished , altogether.
Lieutenant Alexander Pearson established a speed record, arriving at New York with a passenger in an army airplane from Dayton, Ohio, a distance of 592 miles, in 4 hrs 42 min, which is twenty-eight minutes less than the best previous non-stop record.
A fire destroyed the Bon Marche Manchester goods store in Bourke street, Melbourne. The damage is estimated at £30,000. Two firemen were slightly injured.
