Mr C. Hughes, of Hastings, left for Wanganui this morning on a holiday. Miss L. Simmons left Hastings this morning for Wellington on a week’s holiday. Mrs L. A. Percival and child left Hastings this morning for Wanganui bu a holiday visit. Mi - . A. B. Roberton has been empowered to act as honorary consul of Japan at Auckland. Mr F. W. Cook, managing director of the Heretaunga Dairy Co., left for Wellington this morning on a business visit.

Mr Barry Coney,' of Auckland, has been appointed judge of the vocal and instrumental sections at the Napier Easter Competitions. Miss M. Richmond, of Kelburn, who has been staying in Hastings with Mrs Toogood, left on her return to Wellington this morning, accompanied by Mrs Toogood.

The Southland Power Board has accepted the resignation of its distributing engineer, Mr G. F. Ferguson, who intends entering practice as a consulting engineer. Mr. H. F. Ayson, barrister of the Supreme Court of New Zealand, has been appointed Resident Commissioner of Raratonga and Chief Judge of the High Court of the Cook Islands, as from October 13. 1922.

The Hon. Lucv Jellicoe is a passenger by the Remuera, which arrives from England next week. Mr. and Mrs A. Bovle. of Christchurch, and Sir James and Lady Mills are also travelling by the same boat. Sir William Herries, who has not been in good health for some time, has accepted the advice of his doctor that he should become a patient of the Bowen Street Hospital. He is in need of a complete rest for several weeks. The many friends of Mr J'ames O'Neill, of Hastings, will learn with sorrow, that his condition is very low, and that his friends entertain no hope of his recovery. His two brothers are expected to arrive by<he evening’s mail train from the North.

At Wesley Church, , Westport, on Monday, Miss Bernadine Johnston, eldest daughter of Mr W. T. Johnston, chief postmaster, Westport, and Mrs Johnston, was married to Mr Leslie Roberts, of the staff of the Bank of Australasia, Dunedin.

A naval wedding which attracted considerable interest took place at St. Aidan’s Church, Remuera, Auckland, on Tuesday, when Miss Freda Hellaby, third daughter of Mrs Hellaby and the late Mr. Richard Hellaby, Bramcote, Remuera road, was married to Lieutenant Leslie Richard Romer, R.N., of H.M.S. Chatham. Mr H. Gilmore Smith accompanied by his wife, left Hastings this morning for Masterton, where he has been appointed clerk of the Magistrate’s Court and Deputy Registrar of the Supreme Court. The Hastings Court officials members of the Hastings bar and several of his many friends among the public; assembled to bid himself and Mrs Snlith adieu.

The Rev. G. T. Robson has been nominated vicar of St. Columba’s parish, Grey Lynn. Mr. Robson was educated at St. John’s College, Auckland. He was ordained- deacon in 1911 and priest in 1912. He was formerly curate of St. Mary’s New Plymouth. He served with distinction as a chaplain at the front during the great war and received the Military Cross.
