SHARK TRAGEDY.
IN NORTH QUEENSLAND. In water between Scamess and Torquay, in North Queensland, that were thought to be practically safe from sharks, a young man has just lost his life after a terrible fight with one of the monsters. Alfred Grassman. aged 19, was the victim. He was bathing, with an uncle and two friends, when th© shark attacked him, and his right side was torn away from the armpit to ' the stomach. Grassman managed to reach th© shore after beating the shark off, and was taken to a shed for attention, but died shortly afterwards. Deceased was visiting Pialba from Cordalba, where he resided with his parents. The news of the tragedy has caused widespread consternation, as for the past 40 years there had not been a single record of any similar incident. Grassman was only in between three and four feet of water when attacked. Subsequent to the tragedy, the shark continued to circle about the water, and was easily discernible from the shore. Several lines were thrown out, and one man fired four shots at the monster, but without effect. Deceased was about to leave for his home at Cordalba just before the tragedy, but decided to prolong his stay.
