LAST YEAR’S BANKRUPTCIES.
FIGURES FOR HAWKE’S BAY. Seventy-three bankruptcies were recorded in Hawke’s Bay during 1922, a,s against 27 in 1921, and 10 in 1920. The figures for last year, which are probably a record for Hawke’s Bay, illustrate the effect of the slump in the early part of the year. The monthly figures are as follows:—
The slump and the financial stringency seem to have been worst in the latter part of 1921 and the first six months of 1922, but, with the recent improvement in the money market and prices for products, there has been a marked improvement. Twelve farmers filed petitions in bankruptcy last year, while other branches of business that seem to have been hit hard by the slump are the building,, trade and the motor trade. Although the number of bankruptcies is probably a record, there were no big failures during the year, most of the estates being comparatively small.
