THE HERRIN TRIAL.

GUARDS ACCUSED OF PROVOCATION. New York, Jan. 5. A Marion telegram states that at the miners’ trial a defence'witness testified that the mine guards fired the first shots in the Herrin riots from a concealed gun at the mine. The witness declared that he saw a crowd of miners, some with guns, approaching the mine. Two miners offered tp persuade the non-union workers to quit. Then, the witness saw an advancing miner fall under the guards’ fire, after which his fellow-miners retaliated. — (A. and N.Z.)
