Classification lists for assistant teachers in secondary schools are gazetted says a Wellington telegram. Quite a quantity of machinery and equipment for putting in the concrete at both the Mungahao and Arapeti dam is now on hand, and everything points to a start being made with this branch of the work early in the New Year (states the “Manawatu Standard”). The excavations arc proceeding satisfactorily.

“Men don’t find their way here to get what they like,” said Mr Justice Chapman, in addressing prisoners in the course of sentencing them at New Plymouth; “they usually get something they don’t like here, and whether you like the sentence of the court is of no concern just now.”

Yesterday whilst Mr Joseph Saunderson, an engineer employed at the Hawke’s Bay Fruitgrowers’ Ltd., Hastings, was stirring up the fire in one of the port holes of the gas producer which drives the engines, a back fire drove the flame into his face, with the result that his eyes were badly burnt. He was attended to by Dr. Johnston. The extent of his injuries may prove serious. The accident should serve as a warning to persons working in connection with gas producers to exercise every caution in their operations. A former well-known sport who was for long a resident of Gore bought land near Wanganui about four years ago, and writes to a friend as follows: “We have had a great fight for the past three years, but we see daylight ahead, and although perhaps we will not make much money for a year or two, we will be able to hang on. We did not sell any wool last year. We have sold fat lambs at lOd per lb, and expect close upon Is per lb for it, as ,it is very good. The farm is looking “tip-top,” and we hope to carry 2000 ewes next year. The lucerne is great, and we intend putting in more this season. Thanks to the rise in prices many men in a similar position will be able to sleep sounder, and have the satisfaction of knowing that their labour and worry have not been in vain. ’ ’
