MID-AIR COLLISION.
AERIAL DISASTER IN VIRGINIA
(Received 7, 2.5 p.m.) New York, Dec. 6. At Norfolk, Virginia, two officers and four privates s were killed when a pursuit aeroplane, piloted by Major Gearheart, collided with a Martin bomber, piloted by Captain Doyle, in a crash 300 feet above the Langley flying field. Three men were killed by the fall and the others were burned to death'.
Captain Doyle, with four men, was leading the formation of five bombers just taking off, when Major Gearheart’s aeroplane headed into the group. It is believed his steering gear went wrong. Four hombers averted collision by suddenly mounting, but the fifth met the ’plane headon. both machines crashing in flames. — (A. and N.Z.)
