RECENT HASTINGS THEFTS.

TWO LAf)S ARRESTED.

At the Hastings Court House, this morning, before Mr. George Land J.P., two lads, bearing the romantic not o say professional names of Hector Thune Lambert Robert Berggren, aged 17, and Mervyn Valdemar Berggren, aged 15, were charged with theft.

Both boys were arrested by Detective hitzgibbon and Constable Brenchley yesterday afternoon, and Hector Berggren was charged with, on or about July 24, at Hastings, stealing (1) a vise, value 20s. the property of William Baxter Jones, Hastings, and (2) two plummer blocks, value £2, the property of Messrs Booth. McDonald and Co., Hastings. ' Mervyn Berggren was charged with, on October, at Hastings, breaking and entering the duelling house of Norman Grey, and stealing therefrom £3, in money, the property of Norman Grey.

Mr. E. J. W. Hallett appeared for both accused, who, on the application of Detective Fitzgibbon, were remanded to appear next Wednesday. Hector Berggren was allowed bail, in IIK mother's surety of £5O, on lier undertaking that lie will appear. Mervyn Berggren, who is really a juvenile, has lost the privilege of the Juvenile Court, as he had been previously convicted, and when arrested, he was on probation. He was handed over to the Probation Officer, to be taken to the Napier .Receiving Home. Further charges am pending against Mervyn Berggren and it Is understood that these further charges are connected with the series of thefts which have occurred in Hastings recently.
