NAPIER CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

The monthly meeting of the Napier Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday afternoon. Mr. R. W. Waterhouse in the chair: Messrs. R. M. Chadwick, J. VV. Norrie, T. Ringland and J. Moiling. Leave of absence was granted Messrs S. McLernon, A. J. Dixon and K. McLeay. Correspondence was dealt with as follows:— From the Wellington Chamber of Commerce dealing with the trade of Samoa and quoting interesting figures, also .suggesting that New Zealand should get a bigger share of the trade than Australia, being much nearer. Ihe letter may he seen by those interested at tlie Napier Chamber of Commerce office. The H.B. Farmers’ Co-op., re C. and D Line steamers loading at London for Napier and asking the chamber to support their action, was received and support to he given. With reference to the annual conference at Dunedin on November Ist and 2nd of the N.Z. Associated Chambers of Commerce, Mr. Edwards is to be asked to attend as a delegate, failing him Mr. Chadwick. A sub-committee was appointed to deal with the matter of remits for same. The chairman said he had wired the Hon. J. G. Coates protesting against the Aged and Infirm Persons Protection Bill, which he thought unnecessary and wrong. Mr. Chadwick was of opinion that Government departments controlled too many things in this country. The chairman’s action was endorsed. Re the AVaikaremoana scheme and the deputation to the Minister, the chairman said it was rather in the air and they did not know where they stood. If the scheme was to he gone on with, they, as a chamber, should ; take pome active steps in forming a j power board.
