KROM BANK CLERK TO MILLIONAIRE. i Sir Paul Chater, one of the wealthiest men in the East, whose rise to fortune is a romance of commerce, was London recently on a business visit.. About 58 years ago Paul Chater, who was then * 18. went to Hongkong, where he worked as a bank clerk at £5 a month. To-day he is a directwr of 16 companies; he is the senior unofficial member of the Hongkong Executive Council; his house. Marble Hall, at Hongkong, is a show place; and he has a collection of porcelain for which lie has been offered £250,000. ■‘l am in England in connection with the development of coal-mining in China." he said. “There is a great deal of coal in China, and I think that when the state of the country is quieter the mining of coal will be undertaken properly. \\ hen this is done I hope to organise iron and steel works in the British territory near Hongkong. Hongkong has given me a great deal, and I hope to be able to do something for it in return. If T can leave an iron industry as a heritage 1 shall be glad."
