MAORIS ARE ANNOYED. DESECRATION ALLEGED. Wellington, Sept. 21. On behalf of the hapus of Ngatitewhiti Hamua, Ngatawhikura. ana Ngatituparikino, in relation to the Pukeariki Pa (Aew Plymouth), Neha Kigra and sig other natives have petitioned Parliament as follows:— “When this pa. Pukeariki, was taken over by you, Pakeha, it was understood by our ancestors that our urupas (burial-grounds) were to be reserved from desecration, but you did not consider the remains of our ancestors, for you took the hill, which was our principal urupa, levelled it. and threw the bones of our ancestors into the sea. “We had two burial-places, the one referred to in the last paragraph, and the other, known as Waitapu. in the Moturoa block. “Your petitioners have recently been informed that this urupa is going to be taken from them, either by the Government or by the New Plymouth Harbour Board, for street or railway purposes. ‘Your petitions therefore pray that the remains of their ancestors be not disturbed, and that the said Waipatu be reserved for them, and that they may he permitted to bury their dead therein without interference from anyone. and that compensation be paid them for the land taken as set out in the first paragraph.”
