LAWN TENNIS.

ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Hastings /Lawn Tennis Club was held in the Hawke’s Buy Jockey Club rooms last night, when Mr C. H. Cato occupied the /ehair. REPORT AND BALANCE SHEET. The report, including the figures showing the state of the club’s finances, as published yesterday, and the balancesheet were submitted and adopted on the motion of the chairman, Mr G. Ebbett. Mr G. Maddison, speaking on the balance sheet, urged members to use every effort during the present season, to clear off the club’s liabilities. The position was absolutely sound, but members must recognise their responsibilities and the necessity for making a combined forward movement regarding the club’s finances.. The president agreed with Mr Maddison. Although the finances of the club were firm ,an effort must be made to reduce the overdraft. They hoped to make somthing out of the tournament, but that should not be relied upon and he hoped to see the members organising a movement to clear off the club’s debt. t Mr G. M. Spence explained that the club had extensively improved the property, and had put their money into the grounds rather than into their bank balance. A heavy amount had been written off for depreciation, and they had been put to much expense in the purchase of a section, the removal of the pavdllion, the fencing of the grounds and other work of improvement, the club, in the meantime, depending on the members subscriptions to meet the outlay, but no serious effort had been made to cope with this unu-uai expenditure. Lt had been suggested to organise a gala day or a “shop,” and some special effort of this kind must really be made. What he wanted to see was all the members taking a live personal interest in their own property, their own club, and their own game. In this redpect, he v;is obliged to say that he did not think the committee received the support from members that they were entitled to expect. Mr George Ebbett considered that the actions of the executive for the next two or three years must be governed by economy. The finances of the club were quite sound, but there had been a drift in extra expenditure on the grounds, which might now come to a stop. They might have an opportunity of making something at the tournament this year, but that was only for this year, and they should make an organised special endeavour to raise tunds, and if they all combined with earnestness and euthuisasm, they would succeed. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. Following officers and committees were elected for the ensuing yeaT:— President. Mr C. H. Cato; vice-presid-ent, Mr A. I. Rainbow; hon. secretdry, Air G. M. Spence; hon. treasure?, Mr L. A. Denton; hon. auditor, Mr John A Fraser. Coromitee, Messrs F. b. Candy, D. Cowan. H. A. Heslop, G. A. Maddison, H. Hassall, b. Kirpatrick and B. D. Brown. Fraser k was decided to ask the incoming committee to nmke a serious endeavour to get in the subscriptions in arrear. It was decided to leave the appointment of the opening date to the oom mittee. The meeting approved the recommendation of the committee to hold a “shop” in November. It was decided to make the local clergy honorary members. A vote of thanks to the ladies, the outgoing officers and the committee concluded the meeting. __ I
