INCOME TAX RETURNS.

PERSISTENT F AILURE TO SUPPLY Wellington, Sept. 22. For the past nine years William Corman failed to supply inome tax returns to the Commissioner of Taxes and the matter was brought to a head this morning when defendant was charged before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., with this offence: The Commissioner of Taxes was represented by Mr. J. M. Tudhope, who explained that the defendant had neglected to furnish returns for a considerable period. Recently he had employed an accountant and the figures for the last two years had now l>een supplied. The returns for the remaining seven years were now being attended to, but it was a big undertaking on account of Corman’s defective method of bookkeeping. It would be some time before the returns could be completed. Defendant had failed on numerous occasions to take notice of letters from the department. Mr. Perry, for the defendant, explained that the main reason for not furnishing details was that the defendant knew nothing about bookkeping, and consequently allowed the matter to slide. The defendant was fined £25 and costs. A similar charge was made against Mr. Wm. Wander, for whom Mr. C. B. O’Donnell appeared. The case was adjourned for a fortnight.
