Local and General.

The Hastings Carnival Entertainment Committee will meet at 7.30 tonight in the Chamber of Commerce rooms, Dominion buildings. A boy two years old was killed at Tariki, Taranaki, yesterday afternoon. Ho was in a side-chair of a motor cycle ridden by his father, Matthew Badieh, restaurant keeper, Inglewood, when the veheile came into collesion with a calf and the boy was thrown out and his neck broken. “It’s no joke, sir, hunting round for a job,” said a defendant in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday afternoon. “You try it and see,’*’ he advised Mr. H. Y. Widdowson. “It’s like scratching round in the dark like a blind fowl,’’ the defendant considered. “Not every can have a soft, cushy Government job, you know.’’’ “You don’t mean me, do you?” the Magistrate asked. “Oh, no, sir,” was the reply of the deiendant, who added that he would work for three days, and then followed a “fortnight doing a starve.” There is intelligence required even in sweeping. The schools’ medical officer stated to the Education Board in Napier yesterday that the faulty sweeping was one of the greatest faults he had to overcome. Ono member said he had started work in a place where th© owner persisted in a proper clean-up and the employee’s first duty was to sweep up. They wore taught to do it intelligently. They had thought the employer was a faddist but ho (the speaker) had lived to respect this particular fad, and ho had taught many to sweep in an intelligent manner since. Very deceptive in weight and ring, the counterfeit florins now* in circulation in the city (says the Lyttelton “Times”) can be easily detected by their greasy feel, and the fact that they discolour th© fingers, as the metal rubs off easily. The florins, on being rubbed, have the feel of silver paper when pressed over a penny. Linotype metal has been used in casting the florins from plaster of Paris moulds taken from real coins. Consequently, the imitation is easily detected. as regards ths designs, which come out very sharply for a counterfeit, and the coins are bright and shiny. Foreigners in the North Island are suspected of circulating the coins. Some time ago counterfeit halfcrowns were circulated. Dog and poultry fanciejs are reminded that entries for the Hawke’s Bay A. and P. Society’s Spring Showclose on Wednesday, 4fh October. The sections for both dogs and poultry are most comprehensive and include classes for all the well-known breeds. In the former section, in addition to the classes for purebred dogs, there are classes for working dogs, and in the poultry section there are classes for utility fowls and ducks as well as the open classes, for w’hich a number of special cash prizes are offered throughout, including a first and second prize for the exhibitors securing most points, throughout the poultry section. The secretary will be pleased to forward free of charge, leaf, let of classes, to all interested, on ap plication to the society’s office. Tennyson street, Napier, or copies may be had jn application to Mr. F. C. Wilkinson, Queen street, Hastings.
