RED LETTER DAY. [1 IN THE NORWEGIAN TOWNSHIP. t Dannevirke. Many of the g original settlers, now old and infirm, were present, and a big assemblage inr eluded Sir George Hunter, M.P., Lady Hunter, and Mr. Wiig,Norweg>an g Vice-Consul in the Dominion, who ? came from Invercargill to be present. Speeches appropriate to the occasion were delivered, and a memorial oak e was planted by the oldest original set- , e tier, aged 90, to mark this golden jubi- _ lee. The national flag was presented by the Norwegian Vice-Consul and a e beautiful Wreath was placed at the I I foot of the oak tree in loving memory’ v of the pioneers. Sir George Hunter a unveiled a pplished granite memorial B slab, which will perpetuate the occaa sion, and a cable was read from the 5 Norwegian Consul-General in Mel- - bourne, conveying from the Norwegt iian (iovernment greetings from the j homeland to the pioneers and dej scendants.
