SWIMMING.

NAPIER CLUB ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Napier Swimming Club was held last evening. Mr. J. Hislop presided. The annual report showing a successful year and balance sheet showing a credit were adopted. Speaking to the annual report the chairman said the club should do all in its power to encourage juniors. The club had done well in the past but they had to endeavour to counteract the bad treatment the juniors had to submit to last year. The Napier Borough Council had demanded all the capitation prescribed by the Government and the teachers had done the teaching with occasional assistance from the baths attendants. If the usual charge had been paid for admission to the baths the Central School would have paid £9 whereas they had to pay £l6 10s. The other schools were on a similiar footing. The result would probably be that some of the classes would not be proceeded with this year. Mr. E. D. Berry pointed out that the club was being treated in the same way . It had gone to a very heavy expense in bringing champion swimmers here from Auckland and had made a small profit while the Council took over £l3 as its shark, more than three times as much as the club which had all the worry and would have had to stand any loss. He suggested that during the coming season the club should revert to it* old scheme of running carnivals at the breakwater on Saturday afternoons. There was always a good attendance and the carnivals were successful. The matters were referred to the incoming committee. The election of officers resulted as follows: —Patron, Mr J. Vigor Brown, M. P.; vice-patron, Mr J. H. Coleman; president, Mr. C. H. Edwards; vice-presidents, Messrs H. D. Stevenson, L. Freedman. J. Hislop, John Chambers, T Heath, F. G. Smith, J. C. Bryant. E. R. C. Bowen, H. Rohieson) m recognition of their valuable services during last season. In the election of vice-presidents the meeting redued the number conand appointed only those who were considered to have* warranted the honour by their interest in the sport in bygone years.
