The voting for the Mangateretere School Queen Carnival up to this morn ing is as follows:—No. 1, Miss Pearl Cooper, 2960; No. 2. Miss Gloria Chadwick, 2940; No. 3, Miss Christie Groves, 2480. The voting will not be made known agaiu until after the poll closes at 8 p.m. on Saturday next, September rd. A euchre party is to be held in the Public Hall. Whakatu on that date, and the result of the election will be announced there. His Worship the Mayor of Napier, J. B. Andrew, Esq., has received the following letter from the General Manager of N.Z. Railways:—“With reference to your representations to the Hon. the Minister of Railways, who has same to me for attention, on behalf of residents of Munroe street and adjacent streets regarding what is stated to be a nuisance created by smoke from the Napier railway workshops, I have the honour to inform you that instructions have been given for the height of the smoke stack at the shops te he increased and also for coal of a less smoky nature to be used in the furnaces and other fires. This arrangement will, it is anticipated ,have the effect of minimising the inconveniasid to be now experienced.*’
