London, September 20. The “Daily Express” reports that the Kemalists have entered the neutral zone near Chanak.—(A. and N.Z.) A Constantinople cable states that the Turkish cavalry have reached the outskirts of Bigha, on the edge of the neutral zone, 50 miles from Chanak.—(Reuter.) Ferid Bey representative of the Kemalist Government at Paris, interviewed at Paris by the “New York Herald,” declared that the Kemalists intend to occupy Chanak, as they do not recognise the neutral zone on the Asiatic side, though recognising the Allied occupation of Constantinople and Gallipoli. He said that if the British wished to provoke trouble the blame would be theirs. Turkey did not admit the right of any nation to prohibit her from placing troops anywhere on Asiatic side of the Straits. When the Kemalists occupied that side they were willing to sit at the peace table and even to agree to an Allied garrison on Gallipoli and the protection of minorities. If blood was shed, it would be Britain’s fault. Her demands were illogical. “If a conflagration starts it will be very dangerous, and may even be fatal to the British Empire.”—(A. and N.Z.) A Washington cable reports that the Greek Legation has issued what purports to be the text of a treaty between Russia, Germany, and Turkey, which the Legation says the Greek Government obtained in Constantinople from the Allied Legation. According to this treaty the three countries agree to make a common front against the enemy of any one, and to pursue a common foreign policy against any nation acting arrogantly towards the Powers defeated in the Great War. Other nations of common interests with territory contiguous can join the Alliance, whose members pledge each other to favoured nation treatment economically, and not to lay down arms until the national aspirations of each member shall have been fully satisfied I An exodus of Christians has begun at Constantinople in anticipation of the Kemalists’ entry and a repetition of Smyrna atrocities. Thousands of Greeks are besieging the Consulate for passport vises.—(A. and N.Z.) An Athens cable states that Kemal Pasha has left Smyrna for Necomedja, near Ismid South.
