NEW ZEALAND SPORTSMEN.

RETURN TO DOMINION. During his six months’ absence from the Dominion Mr. G. D. Greenwood, the well known Canterbury sportsman, who’returned by the Corinthic, which arrived at Wellington on Monday, witnessed some racing in America and England. He attended meetings at Ascot, Goodwood, and Newmarket. The opening day of the Ascot meeting, at which Royally is generally well represented, was spoilt by bad weather. Although fine in London, it was riming in torrents at Ascot, and many ot those who made the trip did not see the racing. Some interesting racing was witnessed on the three days, the Derby winner. Captain Cuttie. being being among the competitors. There is only one meeting a year at Ascot, also at “glorious” Goodwood, and under the circumstances, owing to want of funds, these clubs are unable to do as much for their patrons as they would it they had more meetings. Mure improvements are noticeable at Newmarket, where several meetings were held during the year. One thing that struck Mr. Greenwood was that it was much pleasanter for the general public to attend a meeting in the Dominion than at Home, where they were not catered tor. Many of the races at Home are run on straight courses. Riders were compelled to keep the places drawn by them at the start, this tended to do away with the jostling, bumping, and riding fort positions at turns noticeable in circular courses in the Dominion. He considered that several riders at the head of the profession in England were incomparable, polished horsemen, and fit to ride any horse. The New Zealand jockey, H. Gray, looking fit and well, was in the saddle at the different meetings he attended in England, and appeared to be riding in his best form. Mr. and Mrs. Greenwood went South on Monday night ami returned to Wellington yesterday. To-day they journey to Auckland to catch the Moeraki for Sydney.
