Mr. A. H. Maning, manager of the Mornnsville branch of the Bank of Australasia, has been appointed manager of the bank’s Hamilton branch. Miss S. Jones left Hastings this morning on her return to Kaikoe. North Auckland, after a visit to her father. Mr. W. B. Jones. T* Robinson, accountant at the Greymouth Post Office, who was operated on for appendicitis at the Grey River Hospital, is progressing favourably. The death took place last week at Remuera of Mrs Catherine Camoron, widow of the late Mr. Wm. Cameron, a well-known Auckland builder. The deceased lady was in her 76th year. Miss Charlotto Gleeson, aged 75 years, a resident of Arthur Street. Ponsonby, died suddenly at the Auckland Hospital at about mid-dav on Saturday. Mr. James H. Phillips, one of the oldest residents of Raglan, died at the week-end at Hamilton. Deceased arrived at Raglan in 1857, and engaged in farming pursuits. Mr. Thomas B. iVnner. whose death is reported from Rotorua, was well known in Tauranga. where Ke occupied the position of headmaster of the local district high school for many years. An early resident of Auckland, Mrs. Mary Shedden, died at her residence m Franklin Road, in her 97th. year. The deceased arrived in New Zealand, when a single woman, in the year 1854. by a small sailing vessel named the Island Lass. The (engagement is announced of Miss Mavis E. M. Silver and Mrs Silver, of Ealing Common. London. Them passed away at the Masterton Hospital, Mr. George Sayer, second «on of the late Burges Sayer, first police constable of Wellington. The late Mr. Sayer was born in Wellington seventyfive years ago, and he spent the greater part of his life in the Wairarapa. The Rev. G. J. and Mrs Williams, of the Australasian headquarters of the London Missionary Society. When the Arbitration Court at Wellington was tn open on Monday morn, ing. Mr. W. Scott, the employers’ representative. became indisposed. He revived after a little time, hut was unable to take part in the sitting, and thn parties consented tn the watersiders* case going on with His Honour Mr. Justice Frazer and Mr. M. J. Reardon on the Bench. A sad case of suicide occurred at Whenuakura on Friday afternoon, Mrs Mary Pickup, wMte of Mr. J. W. Pickup, a well-known farmer in that district, being found hanging by a piece of clothes-line to a hook in the ceiling of a bedroom in her residence, reports the Patea Press. A letter was subsequently found in which the deceased expressed the intention of doing away with herself as she was tired of life. i An application for leave of absence to enable him to volunteer for active service, with safeguards as to his position in regard to superannuation and grading, was received by the Wellington Education Board from Captain A. T. White. M.C.,' a teacher at the Terrace School. Accompanying the application was a letter to Captain White from headquarters of the First Battalion of the Wellington Regiment, asking Captain White whether he was available to proceed overseas at short notice. The board granted the application and decided to deal in the same way with similar applications. Our Waipukurau correspondent states that Mr MacDonald ,post master there for about seven years is retiring after some forty years’ service. Mr MacDonald has been stationed at various places, including Featherston, the cable station at Nelson, Wellington, Auckland and other offices. He retires at the end of the present month. Mr MacDonald has been an exceptionally popular postmaster here, where his unr failing courtesy and tact has earned* him a high place in the estimation of the public. On behalf of the public we wish him many long years in which to enjoy the leisure he has so deservedly earned. He will be succeeded here hy Mr J. T. Boland, who, at present, is relieving officer at Hastings. Widespread regret will be expressed at the announcement of the death of Mrs Kate Johnstone, wife of Mr Arthur E. Johnstone, of Hastings (formerly chairman of the Hastings Central School Committee), which took place at the Napier Hospital yesterday. The late Mrs Johnstone had been in failing health for a considerable time and only recently returned from a trip with her husband to the Old Country, which it was hoped would have proved beneficial to her. She, however, on her return, developed the old symptoms of her previous illness, to which she has now succumbed. Deceased lady took a great interest in local school matters, having at one time been a member of the Hastings Central School Committee, and also took an active part in matters appertaining to the Baptist Chureh. She leaves her husband and a grown-up son to mourn their loss. The funeral takes place to-morrow at 2 p.m.
