SWIMMING.

NAPIER CLUB’S REPORT. The past swimming season was not a good one for swimming clubs owing to the bad weather. Reporting to its members on the matter the Napier Swimming Club executive states: — During the season the club held two carnivals, and one was abandoned. The first was held on January 11th, but was not up to expectations, owing to a chilly night resulting in a poor attendance of swimmers. The second carnival was dated for February 16th, but was postponed three times and finally had to be abandoned owing to the continued bad weather and fixtures of other clubs intervening. On this carnival the financial loss amounted to over £l5, the result being that the club did not finish the season with the large credit it would otherwise have had. The third carnival was held on March 22nd under splendid conditions. There were about 250 entries, which speaks for itself. This was one of the most successful galas ever held by the club, this being principally due to the presence of the wellknown Auckland swimmers, Miss Pauline Hoeft, champion New Zealand lady swimmer, and Miss P. Page, New Zealand intermediate champion. Miss Hoeft was successful in lowering the Australian ladies’ record for 100 metres. In connection with this carnival the appreciation of the club must be extended to the vice-captain of the dull (Mr. E. D. Berry), who was responsible for the appearance of the visitors in Napier. The loss during the year of several prominent members is also contained in the report, which says:—Your committee much regret having to announce the resignation of Mr. E. C. Robieson, the club’s treasurer, who is leaving Napier to take up an appointment with the “Evening Post” in Wellington. Our best wishes go with Mr. Robieson, whose untiring efforts for the club’s success have won the regard and esteem of all members; also the resignations during the year of Mr. Angus Russell and Mr. J. Cameron, whose efforts for the success of the club and the advancement of life saving will be missed by all swimmers; and the resignation of Mr. C. McLean, one of the eldest members of the club, and a very energetic worker.
