MUSICAL COMPOSITION.

LECTURE BY A. R. DON. A well-attended gathering met at the Hastings Y.M.C.A. last evening U hear Mr. A. R. Don lecture upon “Musical Composition.” At the out set the lecturer intimated his intention of treating the subject in such a manne ras to make an interesting appeal to the audience who may not happen to be musical students. He therefore was glad to have associated with him an orchestra and vocal soloists. The result was that an exceeding y helpful, interesting and pleasurable evening was spent. lhe lecturer dealt with the technical portion of the subject thoroughly and from time to time cunningly introduced instrumental descriptions when dealing with melody, harmony, rvthmn. musical composition, etc. Mr.. Don concluded his treatise by composing some small musical numbers on the spot. A novel and mirth producing item was the composing of a song in which the audience provided the words and the lecturer-the music Vocal solos were rendered by Messrs Ben lev and Crooks. Mr Wilkinson gave a trumpet solo, and Mr. George a trombone solo.. Several well-known selections were given bv the orchestra. The members were Misses Shattky and Kershaw. Messrs. Shattky. Ceorge. Steele. Tong. Palmer and Wilkinson. \ hearty demonstration of appreciation was displayed to lecturer and artists by those present, and the National Anthem brought to a close another lecture evening. The next lecture of the course will he on “Under Italian Skies,” by Mr Horace Cottrell, of Napier.
