Al Wellington to-day, Ronald Adear, who arrived from Melbourne on August 17th, was fined £25 or three months in gaol for making a false declaration by signing a. form in tho Customs office as Harold Balmoral.—(Press Association.) “The fundamental idea of the Bank, ruptcy Court,” declared the official assignee, Mr. W S. Fisher, at a meeting of creditors in Auckland (states the “Herald”), “is chiefly to afford relief to those who hare been unfortunate, and to enable them to got a fresh start.” Tie added that it was very unfortunate there should bo so prevalent a belief that there was a criminal taint about bankruptcy. Th© idea was wholly wrong. A creditor agreed, but, stated that sometimes the Bankruptcy Court had to he used to punish unscrupulous tradesmen who otherwise would be a menace to the commercial commnnitv. Tn cases of misfortune business people usually arranged for private assignments. “Yes,” said Mr. Fisher, “but private assignments are sometimes mad© use of for the purpose of evading the publicity and inquiry that the Bankruptcy Court entails.”
