ELSTHORPE.

(Own Correspondent.) The bazaar organised by the local school committee two months ago for the purpose of creating a fund to improve the school grounds, etc., eventuated last Friday, and was a great success. The net sum realised amounted to over £250. This result was mainly owing to the election of a queen. Four girl pupils were nominated, representing sections of Elsthorpe, and the Oero district. During the last two months, much canvassing was carried on, and dances and sales of produce, etc., were given in support of the candidates. Their efforts, combined with the function on Friday last, resulted in the election of Miss Norah Beachcn as queeji. The final figures which were put up shortly after 9 p.m., amidst much excitement shown by the very large audience, were as follows:—No. 1 candidate, Coast road, Marjory McGaffin, 1954; No 2, Valley road, Norah Beachen, 8060; No. 3, township, Elsie Cheer 6507; No. 4, St. Lawrence, Sylvia Jarlov, 2820. Mrs C. N. B. Williams, Atua, gracefully performed the crowning ceremony. She expressed the pleasure she felt in doing so and wished that each candidate could have had a crown.

There was a large attendance at the opening of the bazaar in the affcFiioon, and in the evening the Hall was crowded. The stallholders were:—Produce, Mrs Watson; fancy goods, Mesdames J. Sutherland and B. S. McAulay; cake stall, Miss McAulay; lollie stall, Misses Watson and Rosie Haycock; refreshments, Mesdames Nelson and J. Pepper and Misses L. Pepper and Sinclair. In addition to the above stalls, the four candidates presided over children’s stalls, excepting Miss Sylvia Jarlov, who was absent through illness, and for whom much sympathy was felt. Mrs Jarlov took her place, assisted by Miss M. Pepper. There were competitions lor dolls, cakes, cushions, brooches and other useful articles and produce. A large black pig was sold, also a small black lamb. There was also a sheep weight guessing competition, and a heavy turkey was disposed of in a similar manner. A combined orchestra 'from Waipukurau played the dance music, led by Mr C. F. Haycodk and Mr McKenzie. Mr H. Haycock, secretary of the school comtnittee, was M.C., and he carried out his duties in a most efficient manner. Mr Jas. McAulay and Mr H. V. Phillips, rendered valuable service during the evening. 1 Votes of thanks were accorded to all Who had added to the success of the bazaar.
