Through a telegraphic error, yesterday General Chaytor was stated to have said that 70,000 to 80,000 men could be raised if the occasion required them. What General Chaytor actually said was that 7000 or 8000 men could be raised. Mr T. W. Attwood, president of the New Zealand Fruitgrowers’ Federation, desires to meet all Havelock and other fruitgrowers in the Foresters’ Hall, Havelock North, to-night at 7.3(1 p.m., when he will give an address on “The Fire Blight Legislation and the Work of the Federation.” Promises and suggestions have been made freely to the members of the Hastings Carnival Committee. It is gratifying to know the business communitv are alive to the interests of their town, and are willing to boost Hastings with finance and energy. The committee intend meeting on Thursday night, when a plan of campaign will be arranged and a secretary appointed. The requirements of the Napier Harbour Board three years hence in power from Waikaremoana will be about 1200 kilowatts. The deputation which goes to wait on the Minister on Tuesday next will have demands totalling about 7000 k.w. The Minister indicated that he would require a 7500 k.w. demand to justify work being earned on. An interesting bigam.v charge has been set down at the Napier Courl in which the woman concerned will he charged with this offence, while the man will l>e charged with going through the form of marriage when he knew the woman to he already married. In most of these cases the man is the bigamist and the woman married unknowing that the man is an offender. At a gathering of business men at the Napier Chamber of Commerce rooms last evening Mr. F. V. Sanderson, late Inspector of Factories and Awards in Napier, was farewelled and made a presentation of a wallet of notes. The presentation was made by Mr. B. B. Creagh, who said it .was a token of the esteem in which they held a just and impartial officer, whose discretion was above reproach. There were several other speakers. Mr. Sanderson replied and introduced Mx. Caddington, his successor. The usual success attended the periodical ladies’ night at the Napier Soldiers’ Club last evening. The pro- : gramme .consisted of first-class items by members of the Napier Savage Club. The orchestra under Savage < Tombs rendered several selections in ; their usual finished style. The following also contributed items :—Savage ( Wilton and Savage Jones, songs; Sav- 1 age Drummond, violin solos; Savage 1 Spiller, recitations. After supper Miss Healey played for dancinp which was , kept up till a late hour. Altogether . it was voted one of the most successful ladies’ nights this season. The ( final ladies’ night takes place about < the middle of next month.
