BUILD YOUR HOUSE NOW.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —There appears to be a misapprehension abroad at the present time that seasoned timber for building purposes is difficult to procure. To prove to those who intend to build how fallacious the above it, 1 will quote from the report of Mr. L. Mclntosh Ellis, Director of Forestry, who has returned to Wellington from a visit to the King Country milling centres from Taumarunui to Taihape. In referring to the increasing production of sawmillers for local requirements and shipping orders, Mr. Ellis says: “One of the first points of interest throughout the district was the large quantity of beautiful, well-seasoned timber stocks now accumulated at the various mills. 1 estimate that there is\ probably in the neighbourhood of 21,000,000 superficial feet of air-dry, thoroughly seasoned rimu, matai and totara building timber now available for immediate building operations. Moreover these stocks have been anywhere from three months to three years in stack, thus assuring the best conditioned timber for house-building purposes. It appears to have been a matter of some seven or eight years since such a fine stock has been accumulated, and my advice to homebuilders is to get busy and take advantage of the splendid sawn timber that is available. It is very evident that prices are now down to a minimum, and the increasing demand will have a hardening tendency.” “It was noticeable,” concluded Mr. Ellis, “that there was no lack of employment in the sawmilling industry in the King Country, although some of the mills are working only five days a week for the time being.” The above reliable information ought to be valuable to those who contemplate building.—l am, etc.. A.B.G. Hastings, Sept. 18, 1922.
