WESTSHORE BRIDGE.

ITS RETENTION URGED. At last evening’s meeting of the Na* pier Borough Council, Cr Bryant drew attention to the suggested destruction of the old Westshore Bridge and thought some action should be taken to endeavour not to have it dismantiled at present. The summer was approaching when the bridge was considerably used apart from carrying water and gas. Many lived there, and had to work in town. It would mean a considerable loss to the trams. The council had paid a share of the upkeep for many years, and should have some say. Cr Harvey said it was but a short time since the County Council had said the bridge would be available for two years or even three and the recent pronouncement was a bomb shell. Cr Crcagh said the proposal to cn tirely close the bridge was ridiculous. Up till six months ago weights up to ten passed over the bridge and now it was being closed to even foot traffic. The harbour works w'ould not require dismantling for two years. Cr Ashcroft said the borough must own a third of the bridge by right, and as part owners they must have some bay. It was decided that the Mayor and Town Clerk wait on the county chairman.
