Mr Alfred JliH has been appointed to succeed Mr Shalski as conductor of the New South Wales Orchestra. Mrs G. J. Harford, wife of Mr. Harford, ex-Mayor of Feilding, died on Wednesday evening. Mrs-G. Bonsfield and child and Miss M. Falvey left by the mail train from Napier this morning on a week’s holiday in Wellington. A sudden death occurred on Sunday at Matamata. Mr. J. J. Farrell, aged 71 years, while attending mass had a seizure. He was carried into the Presbytery, where death took place almost immediately The Hon. C. J. Parr (Minister for Education) will stay in Masterton for the next wedk-end. On Saturday he is to lay the foundation stone of the Wairarapa High School. Mr. W. Stringleman will retire from the position of District Traffic Manager of Railways at the end of this month. He has been traffic manager at Christchurch for the past fourteen years, and rhas completed 44 J years in the railway service. He is retiring owing to the age limit. The death occurred in Cambridge on Wednesday of Mr. David Davies at his residence. Hamilton road, at the age of 66 years, after a short illness. The deceased has resided in the Dominion for about 25 years. He took up farming at Tauwhare and then at Matangi. where he married Miss Shaw of that district. The Public Service Commissioner informed the Hon. C. J. Parr yesterday that he had appointed Professor E. Marsden, Professor of physics at Victoria University College, to the position •of Assistant Director of Education. Professor Marsden in England proceeded through a complete primary, higher elementary, grammar school and university course, winning his way right through by means of scholarships. As a student in Manchester University ho won several scholarships and was finally awarded first-class honours in Physics, B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees. Professor Marsden has taught in elementary and secondary schools in England. He was also lecturer under the London University and afterwards held a fellowship and lectureship in Manchester University until 1914, when he was appointed to the position of Professor of Physics in Victoria College. From January, 1916, to May, 1919, he served with the New r Zealand Expeditionary Force in France, whore he held tho position of major in the Engineering Division of the Fourth Army.
