SHOW WEEK IN HASTINGS.

BUSINESSMEN’S CARNIVAL. ATTRACTIONS FOR VISITORS. Mr H. C. Baird presided at a meeting of over 40 prominent Hastings business people in the Chamber of Commerce rooms, Hastings, last night, to consider the question of having a carnival during the week in which the Hawke's Bay A. and P. Society’s Spring Show is to be held. The chairman said that tho matter bad been taken up by the Hastings Holiday Association, and it was considered that something should be done in show week to stimulate business and advertise the town by providing attrac tions which would induce visitors to arrive early and to stay in Hastings for the full week. Several suggestions had been received—a lantern parade, masquerade ball, Maori entertainment, window dressing competition, motor excursions to Selwyn Park (on the Havelock Hills), and through the district, at nominal prices and so forth. It was also suggested that the Railway Department be asked to run excursion trains from Napier and from Waipukurau. The Holiday Association wanted an expression from the general body of the business people on the subject. It was not a question of making a profit, but if a profit were made, it would be donoted to the band or some other fund for the public benefit. The principal attractions would, of course, be at night, and the programme would be arranged so as to provide amusement for the week. He considered that this could be easily done in the time at their disposal. Mr R. W. Jones said that the Hastings Band had met the Y.M.C.A. to carry out a carnival for show week for the purpose of raising funds. It was not, however, their intention to clash with the business peoples' proposals, but rather to co-operate with them. On the motion of Messrs Robson and Room it was decided to hold a carnival during show week, and to appoint as an executive the Holiday Association committee, with power to add to their ( numbers. The appointment of a secretary was loft in the hands of tho executive and suggestions regarding tho programme were invited. As a result of the enthusiastic business meeting held last night the committee appointed met this morning, an?l formed subscription committees to canvass the town. It was also decided to advertise for a paid secretary. A general meeting will be hold on Thursday night nt 7.30 o’clock in the Chamber of Commerce rooms, Queen street, when a full attendance is expected.
