MINERS' FEDERATION.

THREATENED BREAKAWAY. NOT MODERATES BUT REDS. The Christchuch “Press” correspondent at Greymouth says that the recent Press Association message from Wellington, to the effect that the New Zealand Miners’ Federation was threatened with a breakaway by the West Coast miners, suggested that such disruption w’as possible because coal miners in these parts regarded the policy of the federation as too “extreme.” Lovers of industrial peace, however, should be coy in accepting this suggestion, as in some parts of the coast, particularly Blackball and Paparoa, the criticism against the federation by local members is that its policy is not sufficiently aggressive. There are many among district miners who oppose the always-looking-for-fight attitude, but these are unlikely to take the initiative in forming a sane, moderate organisation. If any coastal secessions come from the federation, the promoters will be those whose favourite colour is red. and whose chief aim is to be the real “bosses” of the coal-mining industry.
