TELEPHONES FOR SOLDIER SETTLERS.

THE WAIPAWA POST OFFICE. (Special to “Tribune.”) Wellington, Sept. 15. Sir George Hunter asked, during the discussion on the Post and Telegraph estimates, whether it was possible to increase telephone facilities to returned soldiers in the many .settlements throughout his electorate. These men had taken up sections in the backblocks and were entitled to the most favourable consideration .and he was sure they would realise that it was essential they should be able to communicate with the centres with which they did business. Sir George Hunter also mentioned the need for improvement in the post office nt Waipawa. He know the present was not a good time to ask for expenditure of public money, but he wished the Minister to promise that directly the condition eased he would have prepared plans and estimates for a new building. The present building was very old and out of date and indequate for the volume of business. In reply the Postmaster-General said he would need to make further inquiries into the request for a new post office at Waipawa. He had a list of forms where new buildings were needed, and Waipawa was not on the list. That was a bad sign. He would obtain a report from the Department, but he ’could hold out no hope for an early start on the building.
