AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS. (Received 16, 11.30 a.m.) New York, September 15 In the semi-finals of the tennis Johnston defeated Richards. 8-6, 6-2, 6-1. Tilden defeated Patterson, but the correct score is not to hand.—(A. and N.Z.) x In the first set of the Tilden-Patter-son match, Tilden served first and games followed service until the third, when Tilden, with two double faults, allowed Patterson to break through. Patterson had a fine service, which Tilden was unable to handle, making many errors at the net. In the second set Tilden broke through the service in the fourth game, with two fine placements. The match was essentially a service battle. Patterson evened matters by breaking through in the seventh, but Tilden spurted qnd won the next three on Patterson’s errors.— (A. and N.Z.)
