NOTES FROM LAST NIGHT’S MEETING. The Hastings Borough Council’s Housing Committee have reported that they had agreed to apply to the Go eminent for £5,000, for ‘he vr?(’.ion of workmen’s homes, and that thev would meet between this and the next meeting of the council to consider details and report to the council.-The Mayor said that they had received applications straight but, and names had been handed to the council by the Chamber of Commerce and the actual applications for loans must be made to the Borough Council, on proper forms. They could only erect six buildings and each application would receive full consideration. The notice inviting applications would bo advertised later. At present there were about fourteen names in sight. The Mlaypr stated that he hoped the electrical engineer would soon be able to announce a reduction of the price of electric light. The Treasury have forwarded the Hastings Borough Council £450, Government subsidy for last year. Mr. Heaton, Government meat inspector at Whakatu. is acting as manager of the Hastings abattoir, during the absence of the manager (Mr. T Short), on ledve The Hastings building surveyor and health inspector condemned a wash house, corner of King and Eastbourne streets, and a stable, at the rear of a butchers shop in Heretaunga street Condemnation was approved. Hart) speaking regarding the £5,000 loan, to be raised for road making, said that he was the only member of the present council who was in office wheff the original proposal to raise the loan was before the council. At that time, there was a definite schedule of work to be done with the money, and he. wanted to make his position clear with those con-, cerned. bv acquainting the counsellors with the‘fact that this schedule was in existance. It was open to the counsellors to do as they pleased regarding what roads the money would be expended on, bur be considered that it was his duty to give them the information he was possessed of. The Hastings Borough Cpuncil intend tq bring a test case so that an understanding can be arrived at as to whether the butchers are bound to take all their offal away from the abattoirs. At present they are leaving certain portions behind, and the council objects The Hastings Boruogh Council, has decided to support the Masterton Chamber of Commerce, m the effort to secure the deviation of the Runutaka railway route. The council, having called upon the trustees in the McLean Estate, ta remove a sturdy poplar tree, growing on the section, in Heretaunga opposite Ingram’s grocery establishment, and enroaclnng on the foot path . . F. H. Williams wrote the council, on behalf of the trustees, requesting them not to insist on the removal ot the tree until after the sale of the prop, frtv next month. The purchaser would then be responsible for getting nd of the tree, but in case the property was not sold the trustees would have the ?ree removed. The letter was considered at last night’s Borough Council meeting, when it was decided to intrustees that the tree must he removed at once.
