Local and General.

The monthly meeting of the Napier High Technical College Board was held last evening. Mr T. W. Bear presided. The director reported he had ordered a wireless receiving set and he was left to deal with the matter. It was decided that representatives of the board meet the Education Board to discuss matters connected with the new school. At the annual meeting of the Wellington Cricket Association last night a resolution of sympathy with Mr Raphael, recently president of the New Zealand Cricket Council, in his severe illness was passed at the instance of Mr M. F. Luckie, who paid a tribute to Mr Raphael’s splendid services to cricket in the Dominion and expressed the hope that he would soon be able to resume his activities for the good of the game. . .

A deputation has been appointed l?y Wcstshore residents to protest against the old bridge being closed. Members of the Hastings Ladies’ Golf Club will find the draw of players for to-morrow’s match on page two of this Issue. A Wellington exchange states that ° intimation has been received by the New Zealand Farmers’ Union from the associated banks that the rate of interest on overdrafts will be reduced when the financial conditions in the Dominion warrant a reduction.” This docs not seem to afford Any very great measure of present consolation to the man who has no early prospect of having means of of his indebtedness to his banker. A general meeting of the A and B committee of the Napier Soldiers’ Club was held last evening. Mr G. S. V. Wcnley presided. The following proposals were carried:—-’(1) That the right of membership of all military defaulters from territorial and cadet parades be held over pending inquiries. () No meetings arc to bo held in the Soldiers’ Club without the authority of the chairman of the committee, other than those held by returned men or members. (3) That £5O of the club funds be deposited immediately in the Post Office Savings Bank. The troubles in Ireland do not seem to have affected the output and consumption of the famous Dublin stout, except, perhaps, to increase them. The Guinness Company has just declared a final dividend making up 29 per cent in respect of its last financial year. This is four per eent better—or. as Mr. “Pussyfoot” Johnson might put it, worse—than the immediately preceding year, when 25 per cent was paid, and. with the amounts carried to reserve and to next years account, indicates the year’s net earnings as over four millions sterling. How rapid has been the growth of profits since the war may be gathered from the fact that the total for 191617 was not quite £2,000,000, and for 1913-14 it was £1,280,000. The company’s issued capital remains at the pre-war figure of £7,00(1000, but since 1914 nearly £3,000.000 has been added to the company’s resources by annua! allocations to reserves. Evidently stout is a strong rival to tobacco in the making of millionaires.
