OTANE.

(Own correspondent). On Tuesday night Dr. Morgan, the organiser of the Red Cross League, addressed a fairly representative meeting in the Town Hall on the peacetime activity of the league. In the unavoidable absence of the chairman of the Town Board, Mr. J. N. Barrie presided and introduced the lecturer. After fully explaining the intended scope of the society and answering a number of questions, it was unanimously decided on the motion of Mesdames G. Davidson and T. Pay, that a branch of the Red Cross organisation be reformed in Otane. ,and_ on the motion of Miss Langridg<> and Mrs Davidson, that MY. Bowden, the league’s canvasser, be asked ix> canvas Otane for membership, etc., and that the names of members be handed to the clerk of the Town Board, who ■would arrange with the chairman of the board to cAll a public meeting when the society will be properly constituted and officials elected. In his speech Dr. Morgan referred to the good work done by the Otane lieague during the war. the active membership of which was 54. On Sunday night Mrs Don. the president of tfie Zealand Women’s Christian Temperance Union, delivered a lecture to a large audience in the Town Hall, the chair being taken by the chairman of the Town Board. Considerable interest is being taken in the forthcoming election of the Town Board, so far nine candidates having been nominated for the five seats. This augurs wiell for the good of the town as it means* fresh interest being taken in the advancement of the place. The majority of the six new candidates have not shown much interest in the welfare of the town during the past, the majority of them being conspicuous by their absence from all public meetings in the past years, so that, with so many showing a new interest, Otane should take a flesh lease of life.
