NELLIE EVANS—ORR CASE.
AN EXTRAORDINARY DOCUMENT Wellington. September 13. At the Magistrate’s Court to-day the adjourned hearing of a charge brought on the information laid by Nellie Evans, boardinghouse keeper, against the Rev. Samuel Robertson Orr, was called. The case is a sequel to the action recently determined in the Supreme Court, in which £2OO damages was given against defendant in connection with a dispute about the tenancy of a house. Ln the information Nellie Evans said she had cause to suspect that defendant caused complainant to receive a document stating that unless informant gave up the judgment in the Supreme Court two witnesses in the previous case would be accused of perjury. The letter also contained offers of assistance by certain persons not named if complainant gave up the judgment of the Supreme Court. Counsel for the defendant. Mr. O. C. Mazengarb. applied for an adjournment for a week on the ground that defendant was unable to be in Wellington on account of ill-health. Defendant had left for the South Island on Armenian relief work, and when returning to answer the charge collapsed. Medical advice had been given to the effect that he should take a complete rest. Mr. E. G. Jeilicoe, counsel for the complainant, objected to an adjournment. Counsel alleged that Orr had locked up the house against the Sheriff and had sold a motor car at Palmerston North. He eluded the police and left for the South and issued a bill of sale on his effects, defendant stating he was a resident of Christchurch. Counsel applied for the issue of a warrant for Orr’s arrest, and stated that a charge of perjury was pending against Orr. The Magistrate granted the adjournment.
