Reasons why the National Rifle Association of New Zealand has been formed were advanced by Colonel R. J. Collins, C.M.G.. at the Rifle Clubs’ Union smoke concert on Saturday night. Colonel Collins said that the need for the members of rifle clubs to manage their own associations had been felt for a long time. It was the inability of the Government to find assistance for the clubs which had given rise to the formation of the National Rifle Association. He asked the mem. hers to give their utmost support to this great movement, for the time was undouhtetdly coming when the Government must help because of the various service matches which were to come off, the very purpose of which was to train the youth of the country in the expert use of the rifle as a national asset. The first meeting of the new association’s council would take place on Wednesday, 20th September, when the service matches would he discussed and arranged for. The first rifle .meeting of the National Rifle Association was scheduled for March, 1923. An unusual case of friendship between animals was recently heard of on a hack country run near Hanmer Springs (writes a Press correspondent). In this case the friendship is between a sheep, a half-bred ewe hogget, and a dog, and it is surmised that it dates from the days when the animals were lamb and pup respectively. They have been running on the hills together, and the dog will not permit other sheep to join up with its mate. Should the sheep become frightened and join up with a mob, it would ultimately disentangle itself and join up with its canine friend again. If a working dog was put out to attempt to round up the sheep, the other would lie in wait, and as the dog under command approached to turn the sheep, the waiting dog would seize the other by the neck and toss him over. The dog under notice has shown no disposition to worry or to kill for food, but has been seen hunting rabbits, presumably for food, attended by its woolly which continues in the chase till it is "winded.” and can go no further. Ultimately the sheep was got into the vards and a fixture placed round its neck to prevent its getting through the fences. The dog remains in the vicinity, and so far has evaded all the wiles of shepherd craft to catch it. The manager is loth to destroy the dog, and end such a unique friendship, particularly when it is doing no harm. Charmingly artistic models and ready-to-wears, iust to hand per . • Athenic.
