PRISONERS SENTENCED.
Gisborne, Sept. 12. In the Supreme Court the following prisoners appeared for sentence before Mr. Justice Chapman .— . William Henry Terry, formerly liquidator of the Gisborne Farmers’ Cooperative Association, charged with converting £1656 to his own use with intent to defraud, and in violation of trust. —Sentenced to 18 months’ hard labour. William Leonard Butler, formerly Deputy Official Assignee at Gisborne, failing to account for money paid to him, and converting the money to his own use. —Counsel stated that the amount involved was about £l6O. Ihe accused, who was 64 years of age, had had no remuneration for seven months. His Honour passed a sentence of six months’ imprisonment. Charles Eric Spurgeon, forgery, uttering, false pretences, and theft. Eighteen months’ imprisonment. James McDonald, breaking, entering, and theft at Ruatorea.—Six months Wi Matahiki pleaded not guilty to a charge of failing to account for £74 belonging to the Tokomaru Bay Native School Committee. The jury returned a verdict of noE guilty. Charles Frederick Buscke pleaded not guilty to a charge of having faded for three years prior to bankruptcy to keep such liooks of account as were usual and proper to set forth at equately his financial transactions. After be " l * over four hours, the jury stated that they could not agree, and a retrial was ordered for to-morrow morning.
