SHEARERS' DISPUTE.

CLAIM AND COUNTER-CLAIM. BEFORE ARBITRATION COURT. Wellington, Sept. 12. ,The hearing of the shearers’ dispute opened in the Arbitration Court to-day. The parties expressed agreement as to the desirability of a Dominion award.

The employers’ proposals are for 20s a 100 for sheep and 17s 6c] for lambs and the union’s counter-claim is for 30s for either.

Mr. W. C. Prime, for the employers, strongly opposed the union's claim. The rates should bo proportionate to the value of the wool, which was below a payable price. A £1 per hundred plus rations would be equivalent to £5 18s a week. He opposed the 43hours week, which would mean a longer season and disastrous results from burrs. Mr. Prime declared that union officials’ action last season had destroyed all right to preference and to acres* to employers’ premises during shearing.
