WESTSHORE BRIDGE.
TO BE ABSOLUTELY" CLOSED. It was reported to the Hawke’s Bay V Council to-day that two niers .ging in the old vVestshore bridge. Cr. Smith asked if the bridge was foot traffic. Vehicular already prohibited. The engineer stated that tlie bridge was absolutely unsafe. In one place it had sunk two* feet. The council decided to close the bridge absolutely, and to take steps to remove it. Cr. Smith said the arrangements for |ightjing and water, the mains for which were carried on the bridge, would have to be entirely changed. The residents would have to make fresh arrangements, and he movea that they be informed of the necessity also that a committee consisting of himself and the chairman be appointed to endeavour to make arrangements for a ferry service to replace the bridge. This was agreed to. The chairman said the matter of water was a serious one; a long ine of pipes would have to be put round the embankment. The only thing ne could see was for the Westshore residents to set up a special rating area to carry out the project.
