COST OF LIVING.
RETAIL PRICES OF FOOD GROUPS 43 PER CENT. ABOVE 1914. According to the official figures given in the Monthly Abstract of Statistics the index numbers for the three food groups as at July 15th is 1537, an increase of nine points as compared with the preceding month’s figure, and an increase of 43.64 per cent as compared with that for July, 1914. In the groceries group prices have remained almost stationary for the past month, the fall of three points being due to slight falls in a few minor items. The rise of 59 points in the dairy products group is caused by a rise in the price of butter in all towns. This commodity shows a rise of, from 3d to 4d per pound over the previous month. A fall in the price of eggs has partially counteracted the effect of the rise in butter. The index number for the meat group has fallen nine points. Most items have remained stationary, a fall in the prices of beef joints in some towns being responsible for the fall in the index number.
