AUSTRALIA’S POPULATION.
OVER FIVE AND A HALF MILLIONS. Sydney, September 9. Official statistics show that the population of the Common wraith at th e end of 1921 totalled 5.510,229, compared with 4,573,868 at the en< of 1911. Births during 1921nunibere d 136.198, or 24.95 per 1000: deaths numbered 54,076. or 9.91 per 1000. The death rate is lower than any othe- country, excepting New Zealand. Heart disease accounted for 9.b, cancer 8.8, and tuberculosis 6 8 per cent, of the deaths, which included 23 centenarians, the oldest being 104. There were 1465 cases of multiple births, including 12 triplets. Marriage statistics show that brides’ ages ranged from 1- to M., One bridegroom reached 93 before he pade the venture.—(A, and N. 4.)
